Subversion’s Secret Sauce

For nearly a decade, open source has been earning its place as a universally accepted approach to software development with results that are undeniably reliable and robust enough for enterprise use.  Subversion itself is used by an estimated 3 million people worldwide and has been adopted by thousands of companies – from retail stores to financial institutions - as their standard version control system.  Not all open source projects see such widespread adoption, but the ones that do have something special – their own secret sauce.

With his many years of open source experience, Greg will explore what it takes to build a thriving open source community, why Subversion has been so successful, and what it must do going forward to stay on top.

Greg Stein, Open Source Visionary & Subversion Committer, is a programmer, speaker, sometime standards architect, and open-source software advocate, appearing frequently at conferences and in interviews on the topic of open-source software development and use. He is a director of the Apache Software Foundation and served as chairman from August 2002 to June 2007. He is also a member of the Python Software Foundation, was a director there from 2001-2002, and a maintainer of the Python programming language and libraries (active from 1999 to 2002).

Stein has been especially active in version control systems development. He was one of the founding developers of the Subversion project, and is primarily responsible for Subversion's WebDav networking layer.  Stein most recently worked as an engineering manager at Google, where he helped launch Google's open-source hosting platform. Prior to Google, he worked for Oracle Corporation, eShop, Microsoft, and CollabNet.

Configuration Management at a Glance – or Two

It is always necessary for people working in a profession to have a firm understanding of all the activities included in the performance of the profession, and of their interdependencies. This is also case for professionals working with configuration management. Experience, however, shows that many developers, testers, project managers, and even configuration managers – both very experienced and newcomers – lack the overview of the configuration management universe in an organization.

In this presentation the configuration management context and contribution will be gradually visualized, and the result will be the configuration management universe, as seen by iNTCCM, shown on one slide. A printed poster of the slide (70cm x 100cm) will be available for participants.

Anne Mette Jonassen Hass, M.Sc.C.E., has worked in IT since 1980; since 1995 as a consultant in DELTA. She is president of the iNTCCM, and member of the syllabus working group.  Mrs. Hass also holds ISEB Foundation and Practitioner Certificates in Software Testing, and has been secretary of the Danish SIGST since 1997.Mrs. Hass is author of “Configuration Management Principles and Practice”, Addison-Wesley, and “Guide to Advanced Software Testing”, Artech House. She has developed the team-game ”Process Contest” and created the posters "... at a Glance - or two" covering the subjects "Configuration Management”,  "SoftwareTesting", and “Requirements Handling”. Mrs. Hass is an experience tutor and a frequent speaker at international conferences.

HOOD Capability Model for CC&VM

Once upon a time there where three baby cats, one called Change Management, one called Configuration Management and one called Version Management. They lost their Mother and didn't know what to do. They wandered around aimlessly.

Excellence in Change, Configuration and Version Management can only be achieved if the correct goals are identified and reached. As these supporting disciplines are intertwined, reaching a specific skill level in one discipline requires appropiate skills in the other disciplines in order to be effective. Change, Configuration and Version Management, CC&VM, are essential to enable other disciplines such as Project Management, Requirements Management, and Software Engineering. The HOOD Capability Model (HCM) for CC&VM shows us how to be successful, one step at a time.
We help the baby cats find their Mother.

Since 1977, Colin Hood has driven the evolution of the control systems from relay based systems, the Programmable Logic Controller (PLCs) up to modern software controlled systems. In various fields Colin Hood has been responsible for the analysis, design, implementation, testing and delivery of complex software systems.

Colin Hood´s methods have always involved application of Requirements Management & Engineering, which explains his success at companies such as Alcatel, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Hella, Interpolis and Miele. An expertise of Colin Hood is besides the improvement of processes within development departments, the support of the change process when implementing new methods or tools. This almost invariably necessitates a cultural change within the affected organisation.

Colin Hood is founder and Chairman of the HOOD Group and co-founder of the International Requirements Engineering Board (IREB).
